What have we worked on this semester? What are we currently working on? Below, you can find a sample of some of the projects that we have been involved in during our time at ASUI.
Garrett's Projects
Parking
Last semester I spearheaded an effort from the Senate to increase student involvement in the decisions made by parking and to get a commitment from Parking and Transportation Services to limit the cost increase in permit rates. Both of these were successful, I am still working with Parking to revamp their oversight board and after this year’s permit increase, rate increases will stay within a 5-8% range.
Food Drive
A few weeks in advance of Beat BSU Week the ASUI was challenged by BSU to a food drive competition, with the winner to be announced at the game. On very short notice we were able to amass over 10,000 pounds of food and thoroughly trounce BSU.
Senate Reform
During my first semester as a Senator I sponsored a change to ASUI’s rules that made it tougher for Senators to miss living group meetings or other assigned duties. Since this bill was passed, the ASUI Senate has functioned in a far more professional manner, with far fewer instances of missed meetings.
Tailgating
From day one as a Senator I have worked both with ASUI’s involvement with the Vandalizers and have been an advocate for improvement to the tailgating system. This is still an ongoing project that I continue to work on with Samantha Buck, the Director of Athletics for ASUI. We hope to see some changes implemented as early as next football season.
IACURH
As a Junior I had the opportunity to serve as a chairman of a conference host committee that brought over 300 students from across the Mountain West to the U of I. This conference put us at the forefront of on-campus leadership and development in our region.
Senate Programming Funding
As a member of the finance committee my first semester as a senator, I was able to take part in the creation of the Senate Programming Budget. A fund that today awards money to groups looking to put on events that benefit students across the campus.
Tricia's Projects
Vietnam Memorial Redesign
During my term as an ASUI Senator, a group of students approached ASUI to redesign the Vietnam Memorial at the Memorial Gym. The old plaque was outdated and didn’t list all the names of the deceased that graduated from the University of Idaho. Serving as the liaison between President White and the student body, I requested funding for a presentation of the new plaque and helped to write biographies on all the Veterans.
Vandal Fitness Challenge
As an active member of the Student Recreation Board, I helped in the planning and coordination of the 2007 Vandal Fitness Challenge. As part of this, I assisted in event set-up, review of applications and food journals, and judging.
Senate Finance Reform
As chair of the Finance Committee, I instituted a new policy regarding Senate funding of student organizations and others asking for money. The new process includes criteria for funding and requires those requesting funds to provide information to ensure that their requests are appropriate use of student funding, something that had not been the case in the past.
Projects in Process
In my current position as Director of Health and Wellness, I am working closely with the Student Health Insurance Program. In addition to boosting awareness of health and wellness issues, I am planning a symposium to inform students of current benefits and services provided by Student Health.
